#MeToo
Like, my previous post the #MeToo movement took a couple years to gain its deserved attention. In 2006, Tarana Burke founded the movement to empower women who suffered sexual abuse and let them know they were not alone. The movement spread quickly in 2017 after actress Alyssa Milano tweeted those two powerful words “me too”. Her tweet inspired people from all walks of life to come forward and speak out about the terrible abuse they endured.
Actresses like Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, and Cara Delevigne called out film producer Harvey Weinstein for sexual harassment. Other women also gained the courage to speak up like Laura Zuniga who was not paid for a job or hired by the company to whom she reported sexual assault. In this case, social media gave courage to those who felt ignored and perhaps ashamed by letting them know they were not alone. There is now a website dedicated to providing resources such as hotlines and chats for anyone experiencing any form of sexual abuse.
