#OccupyWallStreet

This protest stemmed from the financial crisis that occurred in 2008. Citizens who were feeling the effects of the recession were outraged by the increasing disparity between the rich and poor. Inspired by Egyptians who protested in Tahrir Square in 2011, Kalle Lasn and Micah White started the website OccupyWallStreet.org and called for a protest on September 17, 2011... The website quickly spread on Twitter and Reddit, calling 20,000 people to “flood lower Manhattan” (CBS 2011). Although the movement started in New York it spread to 872 cities with the help of social media (CBS 2011). The popularity of the movement emphasized how many were disappointed in the American economy and were desperate for a change.
