#StopCopCity
#StopCopCity has been trending right here in Atlanta after a training center for Atlanta’s police and fire department sparked immense controversy. Protestors have nicknamed this training center “Cop City” and are protesting its building because they argue it is impacting Atlanta’s Forest area and will further “threaten the lives of marginalized people” (ABC 2023). Protestors have taken an active role off social media and gone to the site where the training center is undergoing construction. The protest took on a new meaning when a protestor, Manuel Esteban Paez Teran, was shot and killed by the police. Protestors have used this tragic incident to emphasize their point that the center will lead to more police brutality. While legislators and supporters of the training center argue the opposite, that it will better train officers to deal with complex situations.

You would be shocked to find out how many people don't know about Cop City. I have had to alert many of my fellow ATLiens of the copaganda that is about to be unleashed on our city. It is impending on ATL's lush forest area but also taking away valuable resources that could be spent on those horrible Atlanta roads, our school system, or help cleaning up and finding shelter for the homeless. The police brutality in Atlanta is about to go way up and I'm concerned for our Black youth
ReplyDeleteI don't think the problem is the new police training center as much as it is the conditions of the Fulton County Jail. FCJ has been long overdue for renovations as the jail is in truly disgusting conditions. And while I'm not fighting for inmates to have fantastic living conditions, I do believe their housing shouldn't violate basic human rights. So, why build a new mulit-million police training center when police enrollment is low and the jail is constantly facing DOJ investigations.
